On November 6th, faced with crushing losses, Democrats were in full finger-point mode (they still are). On the "Morning Joe" show on MSNBC wsa liberal and blogger Glenn Greenwald and commentator Lawrence O'Donnell. See the video here.
Glenn Greenwald, a true liberal, was happy that Blue Dogs lost because they watered down the liberalism of many bills.
To that O'Donnell said this:
"Glenn, unlike you, I am not a progressive. I am not a liberal who is so afraid of the word that I had to change my name to progressive. Liberals amuse me. I am a socialist. I live to the extreme left, the extreme left of you mere liberals, okay? However, I know this about my country. Liberals are 20 percent of the electorate. Conservatives are 41 percent of the electorate, okay?...You can sit there and pretend that liberals should run more liberal in conservative districts. You love the loss of the Blue Dogs. The only way, the only way you have a chairman Barney Frank, there's only one way, that's by electing Blue Dogs. It's the only way. That's the only way you have a Speaker Pelosi."
So O'Donnell, admitting he's a Socialist to the LEFT of "mere liberals", admits that they need Blue Dog Democrats to enact reforms that are liberal.
This is the Democrats playbook. Pelosi is much farther to the left than the Blue Dog Democrats, as is Obama and Reid. Yet they are the ones that hold the power of which legislation gets passed.
And as O'Donnell said, it was the Blue Dog Democrats that largely voted for the liberal health care reform and the liberal stimulus.
What does this tell us? It tells us that liberals/leftists/socialists are more than happy for Blue Dogs to represent themselves as moderate to get elected; then when in office, govern as far left as possible. That's the only way they can achieve any liberal legislation: by lying Blue Dogs. And liberals will happily "sacrifice" Blue Dogs on the altar of leftist legislation, as Pelosi just did with 60 members.
When Democrats come to power, they don't enact moderate legislation because the Blue Dogs are never in charge. They try to enact as LIBERAL legislation as possible with the votes they have. As O'Donnell admits, you get a Speaker Pelosi from electing BLUE DOGS.
That is what Obama did as well: represented himself as a moderate (fiscal conservative even!), and then govern as a liberal.
And that is now our rallying call, for EVERY ELECTION going forward, for every election with a Blue Dog. Play O'Donnell's quote of liberals needing to use Blue Dog Democrats, even the ones that "appear" moderate, to enact liberal, even SOCIALIST, legislation. You can't trust any Blue Dog Democrat because they will be beholden to the leftists that run the Democratic Party; a vote for the Blue Dog is a vote for the most liberal person of Congress. A vote for a Blue Dog gives Pelosi one more chance to continue enacting liberal legislation.
Now that liberals have sounded off their game plan, we can defeat Blue Dogs every time they come up. O'Donnell admits liberals are only 20% of the population. Republicans need to focus SQUARELY on Blue Dog Democrats and prevent them from winning; this will ensure that we never get leftist legislation again.
Fool me once...
